What is a STAR-certified smog check station?
A STAR-certified smog check station meets stricter performance standards set by the California Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR). Vehicles flagged as high-polluting, plus many out-of-state title transfers and gross polluter re-tests, must be inspected at a STAR station. Smog Queen is fully STAR-certified.
Do you smog diesel vehicles?
Yes. Smog Queen smogs diesel pickups, SUVs, vans, and Sprinters under 14,000 lbs GVWR. California requires biennial smog testing for diesels manufactured in 1998 or later. Diesel testing takes a few extra minutes because additional emissions components must be verified.
How can I help my car pass a smog test?
Drive your vehicle for at least 15 to 20 minutes before testing so the catalytic converter and emissions sensors reach operating temperature. Do not bring the vehicle in cold or right after a battery disconnect — the OBD-II readiness monitors need driving cycles to complete. If your check engine light is on, the vehicle will fail automatically.
What if my vehicle fails the smog check?
If your vehicle fails, you will receive a Vehicle Inspection Report listing the failed components. You will need to have the issues repaired (we can refer you to a qualified shop) and then return for a re-test. The state allows you to retest at the same station after repairs.
Can I get a smog check on Sunday in San Jose?
Yes. Smog Queen is open Sunday from 9 AM to 4 PM — one of the few STAR-certified smog stations in San Jose open seven days a week. Walk in any time during business hours.
Which vehicles are exempt from a California smog check?
Gasoline vehicles less than six model years old are exempt (four model years for change of ownership), unless brought from out of state. Gasoline vehicles from 1975 or earlier are exempt. Motorcycles do not require a smog check. Diesel vehicles over 14,000 lbs GVWR or made before 1998 are also exempt.
